The Inspiration for Nautical By Nature

Nautical by Nature, our latest collection, is inspired by a mish-mash of some of our very favorite things, like: the smell of saltwater; breezy spring afternoons; memories of childhood vacations; bright bold color; and the warmth of sunshine.

Partnering for Social Good

They say all good things come in three’s. Here at Push Pull, we maintain two very rewarding partnerships.

The beauty of social business in Cambodia is the fact that there are many inspiring organizations to collaborate with. We are a little biased, but I have a feeling we work with a few of the best. Once our beautiful textiles are woven and our products are designed, we reach out to Friends-International and Watthan Artisans Cambodia for their expertise in sewing production.

Our longest partnership is with world-renowned Friends-International, which was recently named one of the top 100 NGOs by The Global Journal. We send a hearty congratulation their way and agree that they’re top-notch.

Friends-International began in Phnom Penh, in 1994, when a young man spending what he thought would be his last night in the city literally stumbled over a group of children sleeping in the streets. His shock and disgust changed his life and those of the children forever. Shortly thereafter, he formed ‘Friends-International’ to protect and educate marginalized children and youth.

Fast-forward eighteen years. Today, Friends-International and its partners annually enable approximately 50,000 young people across the globe to become active and productive citizens of their country.

Friends-International has pioneered a blend of the best of two very different worlds – the advantages of both business & NGO’s – to create a thriving social enterprise. They provide skills training and income generating initiatives to break the cycles of poverty.

Push Pull Cambodia is happy to support two projects at Friends-International – the sewing workshop and home-based production program.

As our collection has grown, we have also had the pleasure of working with Watthan Artisans Cambodia, a worker-run cooperative of Khmer artisans with disabilities.

WAC trains students with disabilities in handicraft production and fine woodcarving in order to increase the employment opportunities for and the independence of people with disabilities. Fair wages and benefits are among the many advantages for their Cambodian artisans. In the cooperative, all profits are shared by the staff and producers and are re-invested in staff development and training.

We are very lucky to be aligned with Friends-International & Watthan Artisans Cambodia and feel that a mutually beneficial partnership can go a long way in this great country.

What Do Push Pull & Jay-Z Have In Common?

A Spring 2012 Fabric You Will See in New York City

Here at Push Pull, we are pretty up-to-date on our pop culture. Therefore in honor of the birth of Hov and B’s baby girl, we thought we would illustrate some important Push Pull facts with the clever wordplay of lyrical genius, Jay-Z.

We create hand-woven ikat textiles. Ikat is a specific dye process to pattern textiles. Therefore real ikat design comes from the layout of threads—not painting or screen-print.
Real recognize real and you lookin’ familiar
{All Around the World}

The time and skill that it takes to weave ikat surpasses many other forms of pattern making—that classifies it as couture.
I know what girls like
I know what they want
I know what girls like, girls like me

{I Know What Girls Like}

Commonly, Cambodian Ikat patterns are passed down verbally from generation to generation. Push Pull Cambodia works with a Khmer Master Designer to develop new patterns that are modern, bold, and globally resonant.
Now history is mine, it tastes so sweet
She’s my trophy wife; you’re coming with me
We’ll have a baby who stutters repeatedly
We’ll name him history, he’ll repeat after me
{History}

We believe that the combination of historical handmade techniques with modern design aesthetics makes Push Pull unique in the world of woven ikat.
And I am one of one
Can’t you see just how long my run?
My rain knew sunshine
Been a star since I was back in one

{A Star is Born}

Push Pull believes in the power of your dreams. After all, we’re living ours.
Wishing on a star to follow where you are
I’m wishing on a dream to follow what it means
{Wishing On a Star}

Push Pull has gotten exposure in many different magazines, editorials, and newspapers over the past year. Here are a few to boast: Design Sponge, Stylesight, Trendhunter, Asia Life Magazine, and Wanderlust for Madewell.
Flyer than a piece of paper bearing my name
Got the hottest chick in the game wearing my chain
{P.S.A}

So if you like us after what you’ve heard, come check us out at the New York International Gift Show on January 28 – February 1. Located at the Javits Center, Booth #6221 in Handmade Global.
After all, we got that

I Spy Ikat: Skirts, Skirts, Skirts!

Ikat is traditionally woven by hand, which is what we specialize in at Push Pull Cambodia. Over the years, Ikat has taken the world by storm. In addition to machine-made textiles, Ikat has influenced print designers, artists and illustrators.

In the last few weeks, I’ve spotted many an Ikat skirt. I love the various ways of styling them – from chic prep, tough & tender, easy boho, to pattern plenty. What have you spied recently?

ikat skirts{1. orangeade; 2. motorcycle maxi; 3. bohemian whimsy; 4. easy-going high-waisted wrap; 5. mix & match maxi.}
